What is Kemetic Yoga?

Kemetic Yoga is an ancient African form of yoga based on the culture of ancient Egypt, then known as Kemet. Kemetic Yoga utilizes movement and mythology from one of the oldest civilizations on Earth, particularly the most important national story, the Asarian resurrection.

Egyptian mythology, when understood as a system of Yoga, gives us significant insights into our own Divine nature. Kemetic Yoga encompasses many myths and philosophies which lead to the reunion of the individual soul with its Higher Self. Utilizing the Thef Neteru Sema Pau system of Kemetic Yoga we travel through a series of 28 postures and 5 phases to move into the Divine Company of the gods and goddess of ancient Egypt. Each god or goddess is understood as field of energy or cosmic principle in which we want to align ourselves with (Ma'at being my personal favorite :)).

In a typical Kemetic Yoga class, we use our physical and energetic bodies to symbolize the Soul's journey on earth. With the incorporation of Vinyasa flow, (my) classes are designed to challenge the body and mind, stimulate the subtle energy channels of the body, and allow the mind and spirit to move toward Ma'at, the personification of truth, purpose, order, balance, reciprocity and propriety.

Students leave class with a greater understanding and appreciation of the philosophy the ancient Egypt and tools of how to incorporate the effort, the path and the progress of the yoga class into their daily lives. Students can also expect to feel renewed, recharged and rebalanced, with a greater sense of purpose and connection.

    1. Greetings Ashlee. Where are you located? What I have grown to understand is that you really have to make your yoga practice your own. I agree there isn't too much guidance for us out there on youtube but there is some...enough for you to experience and experiment with. And then you will find that you can apply some of the principles to any yoga class you find online. Have you come across any of these before?
